‘Walking Dead’ Producers Recall Early Roadblocks at NBC, Image Comics

Speaking at the Produced By Conference, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert spoke of NBC passing on the series and the joke that creator Robert Kirkman made to get the green light for the comic book.

From early meetings with NBC to the quick greenlight at AMC,Gale Anne Hurd and executive producer David Alpert recalled the beginning of The Walking Dead during a Saturday panel at the Produced By Conference in Los Angeles.

Hurd, joined by senior vp business affairs at AMC Marci Wiseman and exec vp global scripted programming original development at Fox International Channels Sharon Tal Yguado, recalled that she first learned of The Walking Dead when it was first published in 2003 but was focused on feature films at the time and didn’t know how to find an ending for a movie based on the series and put it on the shelf.
The early days of the comics, Alpert said, included Image Comics initially balking at the idea of a zombie title. They only gave it a green light after creator Robert Kirkman vowed to include aliens in the story — something that by the fourth issue, the comic publisher realized was a joke. On August 27th, Anchor Bay Entertainment unleashes AMC’s original series “The Walking Dead”: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray and DVD. Available as a 5-disc set in each format, the release contains all sixteen episodes from the past season.

Like the previous releases, the third season comes stuffed with tons of bonus features, including exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, never-before-seen featurettes, audio commentaries from cast and crew, deleted scenes and other surprises.

In addition, Anchor Bay proudly announces that, in response to overwhelming fan response to last year’s Season 2 limited edition “zombie head” packaging, “The Walking Dead”: The Complete Third Season Blu-ray will be available in a limited edition “zombie head tank” package (water not included!) specially created once again by McFarlane Toys.

Season 3 follows the weary group of survivors led by police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), as they take refuge in a prison and attempt to set up a permanent camp. But while invading zombies are an ever-present danger, they must also battle the living, not only in the form of abandoned prisoners, but also the sadistic “Governor” (David Morrissey) and his followers. New characters introduced this season include Danai Gurira as “Michonne,” with her two “zombie pets” in tow, and Dallas Roberts as the Governor’s lieutenant Milton, as well as the return of Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker).

Dispatches From the Set – Gale Anne Hurd (Executive Producer)

The Walking Dead Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd talks about Season 4’s ravenous new walkers and which characters from the show would make great producers.

Q: Sports teams have a boot camp-like practice to get back in shape for the season. What do you do to get everyone back in the swing of things on the set of The Walking Dead?

A: We have to hit the ground running every season. We do have zombie school every year, so our walkers get up to speed. It’s really more of a winnowing-out process — that extras who are eager to become zombies come in and audition for Greg [Nicotero] and he selects the ones that are most unique and believable. But in general, this is our fourth season, and people are so eager to get back. After the first set-up this year, everyone applauded and cheered.

Q: Every year the walkers show us something new. What can fans expect from Season 4’s walkers?

A: I think we’ll have walkers who are even more ravenous than before. We’re in a world where there are fewer people and more walkers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw that on-screen this season.
